"I'm an engineer at heart," says Quang Tran, Senior Program Manager, Computing Technologies (School of Science, Engineering & Technology) at RMIT Vietnam. "I like to build and fix things." But over the past 20 years, what he has been building goes far beyond code and software: a future-ready tech education that prepares Vietnamese students to thrive on a global stage.
Before joining RMIT, Quang worked as an experienced software engineer in the United States. When RMIT Vietnam opened its doors as the country's first international university, he saw an opportunity to contribute to something impactful: shaping the next generation of tech professionals in his homeland.
"What keeps me going is the purpose behind it all," he shares. "This is not just a job. We're building something meaningful, and I'm lucky to work with colleagues who care just as deeply about the impact we make."
Since then, Quang and his colleagues have spent nearly two decades building academic programs that evolve alongside the rapidly changing world of technology. From curriculum development to mentoring students, his focus has always been on preparing graduates not just to work in tech, but to lead it.
"We update our content constantly. We bring in real-world case studies and industrial partnerships. We've been working to make sure our students are equipped, not just with technical skills, but also with the mindset and the confidence they need to thrive - anywhere in the world."
What drives him most is seeing Vietnamese students succeed, both in the local tech scene and internationally. "Some of my former students now work at top names like Google, KMS Technology, or Blizzard Entertainment," he says.
"Sometimes we catch up over dinner or a drink, whether in Vietnam or somewhere across the world where they're now based, and they'll share what they're working on." He smiles. "It makes me incredibly proud to see how far they've come. That's when I feel the most fulfilled."
To him, legacy isn't a grand gesture. It's the quiet but lasting impact of empowering the next generation of Vietnamese tech professionals to stand shoulder to shoulder with the world's best.
