Examples of Projects Led by RMIT Vietnam

RMIT Vietnam involvement with European Projects 

RMIT Vietnam has partnered in two European Commission-funded projects (H2020 and Erasmus+ CBHE) as a member of international research consortiums.

We have received the HR Excellence in Research Award, which is a recognition from the European Commission for institutions that maintain an environment of excellence for researchers and a commitment to providing a supportive, world-class research environment.

Urban GreenUP (H2020)

An EU-funded project which aims at developing, applying, and validating a methodology for Renaturing Urban Plans to mitigate the effects of climate change, improve air quality, water management, and increase the sustainability of our cities through innovative nature-based solutions.

WANASEA (Erasmus +)

The WANASEA project aims at building capacity in the field of higher education in the South-East Asian partner countries. The project aims at providing training, research and networking sessions focused on water and its associated natural resources, considered as a major contemporary challenge. 

KPMG

KPMG commissioned RMIT Vietnam to undertake two studies into the readiness of enterprises for digital transformation in Vietnam and other parts of the world and Corporate Social Responsibility/Citizenship programs, processes and models used by corporate entities in Vietnam and the region. 

Oxford University Clinical Research Unit and Hospital of Tropical Diseases HCMC

Existing deep-learning solutions are practical; however, recognizing Vietnamese handwriting has shown to be a challenge with the extra presence of six distinctive tonal symbols and extra vowels. Vietnam is a developing country with a population of approximately 100 million but has only focused on digitalization transforms in recent years, and so Vietnam has a significant number of physical documents, that need to be digitized. Researchers at RMIT Vietnam have bene collaborating with OUCRU and the Hospital of Tropical Diseases to trial a machine learning-based approach to Vietnamese handwritten medical record recognition.

Air Aware Project

The project was successfully completed with 13 Air Visual Air Quality Monitors installed around Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) increasing the amount from 5 to 18. Additionally, other owners of Air Quality Monitors made their data public. The project was completed by the RMIT team in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and Saigon Innovation Hub. 

Earth Day and World Clean Up Events

Nationwide events are run twice a year and in multiple cities (Hà Nội, Hồ Chí Minh City, Phú Quốc, Mũi Né, Huế, Hội An) with multiple clean up locations over the past 4 years. Funded in 2015 and 2016 by the US Consulate, after which larger MNCs and SMEs started to support with sponsorships.

Plastic Free Campus PR Campaign 

This communications campaign developed by RMIT students will be piloted at RMIT campuses in Vietnam during Semester 3 2020. After pilots are completed at RMIT and adjustments are made from the feedback from participants, the campaign will be launched in other universities in Vietnam. Funding from the Plastics Solutions Fund will help to roll out the campaign to other universities. 

Climate Collage

Partnering with climatecollage.org (now Climate Fresk), RMIT Vietnam will start running workshops to raise awareness among our student body about climate change. RMIT Vietnam also seeks to be one of the train-the-trainer hubs for the Climate Collage in Vietnam. Currently funded internally, but will seek external funding from participants.

#môtôthùng Campaign

Partnering with Happiness Saigon and the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), RMIT Vietnam was the site for the pilot test of this new campaign to help change littering behaviour. Funded externally by corporate sponsorship.

Lại Đây Refill Station (Refill Here)

Innovative refill shop concept partnering with Unilever. Currently a finalist in the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) - End Plastic Pollution Innovation Challenge (EPPIC). Top 15 out of 169 teams and in a 3-month incubation program. A winner for Vietnam in the 2020 RMIT Activator Pitch competition. Funded by Pacific Environment (an American non-government organisation).

HR Excellence in Research

In 2020, RMIT became the first Australian institution to receive the HR Excellence in Research Award. This award acknowledges institutions that maintain an environment of excellence for researchers and a commitment to providing a supportive, world-class research environment.

The 'HR Excellence in Research' award is recognised by the European Commission for institutions that make progress in aligning their human resources policies to 40 principles of the Charter & Code, based on a customised action plan/HR strategy.
