New book from RMIT Vietnam lecturer unlocks key to successful investing

Executive MBA Program Manager Dr Geoffrey VanderPal has drawn on his decades of experience in the finance industry and academic research in his newly-published book on investing.

His first book, Invincible Investing: The Ultimate and Proven Investing Method of Principal Protection with Market Gains: VanderPal Method, is a step-by-step guide to his own unique investment strategy that promises to guard against market instability while achieving the best possible returns.

Dr VanderPal spent a decade working for major banks in the Unites States before spending another ten years in his own wealth management and financial practice, which he subsequently sold. He was awarded his PhD in 2006, and has taught finance at universities across the globe including in France, Bermuda, Ghana, Thailand and Cambodia. In April this year he was also appointed Ambassador at Large and Economist for the Republic of Guinea.

Throughout his career, he said he has always been interested in the question of how you protect a client’s capital investment while making that investment grow at a rate better-than-inflation. “I spent a few years trying to work that paradox out,” Dr VanderPal said.

He began refining his theory during his academic research, which included a study of 10-years-worth of market data. Eventually he applied his strategy to his financial practice’s clients with positive results. His motivation for writing the book was to share this method with the general public so everyone can benefit from it.

The book covers topics including deciding which investment vehicles to use; calculating what percentage of interest, dividends and principal to allocate; and opening a brokerage account. It is written in such a way as to be easily understood even by the beginning investor, and even includes a glossary of financial terminology.

Dr VanderPal said his particular investment strategy was unique, and involved two basic elements: protecting your principal investment and allowing participation in your chosen markets. “The theory allows participation in upside markets with little downside risk,” he said.

The added advantage of his method, he explained, was its ability to achieve stability during turbulent times. “The housing and tech crisis are examples, and there will be another downturn, so you need a way to invest even if the market drops.”

There are direct parallels between his research and his teaching on investment and portfolio management, Dr VanderPal said, but in general, he explained, RMIT Vietnam had strength in its post-graduate programsof visiting lecturers and permanent faculty with 20 and 40 years of professional experience in their fields.

“It is something we are very proud of here. We are able to be that bridge between academic and practitioner-based teaching.”
