RMIT hosts Vietnam’s first ever Facebook Recruitment Open House

On 28 July the Facebook team came to RMIT Vietnam(link is external)’s Saigon South campus to share with students and alumni what it’s like to work for the social media giant.

Tuoc Huynh, Facebook’s SMB team lead for Vietnam, talked about his career and offered insights for students. During the talk he emphasised the company’s mission to make the world more open and connected, and its core values: making an impact, being bold, and adding social value.

Tuoc said his team decided to visit the campus because they recognise RMIT Vietnam’s reputation for producing high quality graduates.

As a six-year veteran of the company, he explained that it was Facebook’s real world impacts on business and community that he enjoyed the most about working there, and encouraged those assembled to “jump on the rocket ship” now.

“Right now there’s a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Vietnamese to be part of an organisation with the ability to directly impact enterprises that can be real drivers of social and economic change,” he said.

Asked about the company’s recruitment strategy, he talked about employing people who could be his next boss, and looked for those who would embrace the power of the platform, remain open and have the ability to switch into different roles.

Tuoc was also keen to encourage a new way of thinking in today’s global “knowledge economy”. He called for the current generation to reject the outdated notion of Vietnamese people as “hardworking”, saying that this was an idea indelibly linked with a factory past, rather than an agile, intelligent workforce moving the country forward.

His team also shared their insights into life at Facebook. All had relocated to Singapore, and all had arrived there via a variety of academic accomplishments.

Account Manager William Nguyen and Partner Manager Mai Huynh both spoke about a collaborative, open learning environment where employees were encouraged to “fail harder” and become “independent action takers”.

“At Facebook, you are empowered to get things done,” said William, “but you are also encouraged to enjoy your life by being your authentic and whole self.”

Manuela Spiga, RMIT Vietnam’s Senior Manager Career and Employment Service, said the event was a great opportunity for students to connect.

“RMIT Vietnam graduates go on to work with the biggest tech companies in the areas of business, marketing, IT and communications, so it makes sense that we would collaborate with tech companies to host events like these.”
