A family legacy at RMIT: a journey across two generations

For Vinh Nguyen, an EMBA alumnus, and his daughter Nhi, now an RMIT student, studying at the same university is a legacy of values passed from one generation to the next.

For Nguyen Thanh Vinh, an Executive MBA graduate from RMIT Vietnam, seeing his daughter become an RMIT student felt like everything had come full circle - a small but meaningful legacy for their family.

He still remembers when she was just a little girl, skipping along behind him. Now, watching her walk through the same university campus he once did as an RMIT student fills him with both pride and peace of mind. It’s not just the world-class education that reassures him, but the fact that the values he once held close are now being nurtured in her, right here at RMIT.

Nhi and her father Vinh Nguyen, EMBA alumnus, and his daughter Nhi Nguyen, TBS student, share the RMIT journey, across two generations.

A deep love for learning is what first led Vinh, then a promising young engineering student, to earn a scholarship to study in Australia. That same spirit later brought him to one of the first Executive MBA cohorts at RMIT Vietnam. His studies empowered him to grow beyond the role of a technical expert, step into leadership, carve out his own career path and make a meaningful impact in his life.

Recently, Vinh and his family returned to Australia, revisiting the places where he and his wife once lived and studied. They shared memories, reflected on the lessons they’d learned and told their children the stories of their own journeys. For Vinh, it was more than nostalgia. It was about passing on values that stand the test of time.

"Taking my daughter to Australia was special," he smiles. "But seeing her study at RMIT brings me ten times the joy. Because here, the values I hold close, lifelong learning and glo-cal thinking, are naturally becoming part of her own growth story, just like they once did for me."
