I've worked in journalism and media for nearly 30 years. It sounds like a glamorous career, but in reality, it's very demanding. When my daughter said she wanted to follow in my footsteps, I couldn't help but worry - and even object. Not because I doubted her abilities, but because I feared she would face the same pressures I once did. However, perhaps the stories I shared about my work unintentionally sparked her passion. And when she entered RMIT, I began to realise that it wasn't just me inspiring her to pursue media and marketing - I was also learning from her.
At RMIT, she studies in a modern environment, learns from excellent lecturers, meets dynamic friends and takes part in practical projects that help her grow every day. She eagerly shares stories about campaigns, competitions and valuable lessons she's gained. What impresses me most is the dedication and joy she has for her chosen path.
For the past three years, I've been her companion – someone who listens to her decisions, doubts and even her stumbles. Sometimes I still worry because this field is tough and constantly evolving. But she gently reminded me, "No job is easy; what matters is passion and knowing what you're doing".
These words made me realise that a parent's trust and support are gifts - treasures we can give to our children. When we trust them, we give them the opportunity to build their own "legacies" and leave their "marks". The more I trust her choices, the more I appreciate the environment where she studies. RMIT not only gives her knowledge but also creates a space where she dares to try, dares to fail and learns how to rise, mature, and move forward with courage. This has helped her gain greater confidence in both thought and action.
While I represent the past, with experiences and perspectives that may no longer fit, she is the future, full of new ideas and many aspirations. Thanks to RMIT, my daughter and I have had the chance to understand each other better - not to change one another, but to walk alongside each other, trust and grow together, creating our own little family legacies. Seeing her grow every day, knowing what she wants, and giving her all to achieve it - to me, that is the most precious gift. Perhaps it is also the most beautiful "legacy" parents can give their children: trust and companionship on the path they choose.
