For the past few years at RMIT Vietnam, I have had the privilege of working as a talent acquisition advisor in the Human Resources Department. You may ask how it relates to the student experience; I had the same question before. I then realised that, with the recruitment portfolios our team is in charge of, we are connected to student success. Every candidate we help bring on board, especially in my portfolios, from Student Connect, Career Services, Library, Student Life to academic teams from Schools has put effort into shaping a student’s journey in many ways.
I always believe that students deserve a support system that empowers them to grow. And it starts with the basic one – hiring people who truly care. I take pride in understanding not just the technical requirements of a role, but the values and energy a candidate brings. Our goal when finding a candidate is not only that they have good knowledge and experience, but they also need to be enthusiastic about working with students in higher education and contributing to student success at RMIT. It is someone who works with the mindset of empathy, care, and student-centeredness. That is also our ‘magnetic needle’ while working in the Talent Acquisition team.
I am glad when a candidate later becomes our staff telling how happy he is when he can help a student. The staff do things way more than just deliver services. They inspire confidence, resilience, and ambition in our students.
One of the most fulfilling parts of my role is supporting recruitment across the Students and Education Portfolio and Schools, from professional to academic staff. These teams are the points of contact for students, guiding them through every single thing from day one to graduation, from academic support to professional development. I have seen how the right hire in Student Connect can make a student feel seen and supported, how a passionate career consultant can open doors to life-changing opportunities and how academic staff can enhance the learning experience at RMIT.
Not only have I observed these things, I have also been shared by the candidates who are RMIT alumni that how well they were assisted and developed during their school time and that is in fact one of the main reasons why they want to come back to RMIT – to give back to the community they used to belong to.
We often say that it takes a village to support a student. RMIT Vietnam is the village that I am more than happy to be part of. That’s the legacy we are always proud of.
