Puluong Glamping - MIB sustainability lessons taken into practice

Nguyen Phuong Dung opens up about how her eco-friendly business was helped by what she learned during her MIB journey. As a one-of-a-kind travel destination for nature lovers, Dung has taken aim at what she calls ‘the sea of sameness’ in hospitality.

Right at the early stage of bringing her accommodation business idea to life, Nguyen Phuong Dung knew very well where she was heading.

“In the sea of sameness in the hospitality industry that promotes luxury indulgence and a ‘travel-for-Instagram-photos’ kind of spirit, Puluong Glamping was born to provide a one-of-a-kind travel experience for nature lovers,” says Dung proudly.

“Eighty percent of our place is open space, with green areas for our guests to relax and truly stay connected with nature and with each other.

“We preserve Puluong’s nature by not using air-conditioners or plastic bags, and we take serious care with the sewage treatment system. We offer eco-friendly alternatives that are just as comfortable for our guests.”

Founding Puluong Glamping with her husband, an architect, was Dung’s first experience in starting a business. She has been applying the knowledge that she gained from her career at multinational companies and from her postgraduate studies at RMIT.

“Without what I have been prepared and equipped for in studying the Master of International Business degree at RMIT, I doubt if we could have made it this far,” she says.

“Various courses in the Master of International Business have guided me through how to run a sustainable business.

“In particular, the elective course Business Operation Management taught me how to project scenarios, events and incidents that might happen to my business, and taught me how to prepare action plans and prioritise my managerial decisions for the survival of my business.”

Despite the young business facing the additional challenge of the tourism slowdown due to COVID-19, Puluong Glamping has been able to maintain its standards through the hard time.

“When the pandemic hit, I was not panicked by it. I remained very calm as I focused on securing positive cashflow and planning for the new normal,” she says.
