Prior to joining RMIT Vietnam, Abdul has taken teaching related roles in Indonesia, Singapore, and the US. He was recipient of USAID democratic and governance scholarship and fellow at reputable centers in Australia and Germany.

He has worked for several local and networked radio stations in Indonesia as reporter, broadcaster, assistant program director, and marketing public relations officer. He was a broadcaster at an internet-community radio station for Indonesian diaspora in Tallahassee, Florida. He was community organizer, facilitator, and researcher in non-for-profit organizations focusing on consumer rights, gender equality, and child education in Indonesia.
