Information on the ethical expectations of RMIT students.

RMIT expects all students and community members to adhere to a series of conduct and behavioural requirements, both academically and socially.

Student conduct

RMIT provides a framework for the management of student conduct that may harm the University and its community. This policy applies to all students enrolled in the RMIT Group, including students on leave of absence, students studying through Open Universities Australia (OUA) or other third party provider of RMIT courses and programs, students studying RMIT programs at global partner institutions, higher degree by research students who have submitted work for examination, graduates; and students in short courses or single courses.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a form of cheating in assessment. It is the presentation of the work, idea or creation of another person, without appropriate referencing, as though it is your own. Plagiarism may occur in oral, written or visual presentations.
Guidance on referencing will be provided by academic staff teaching your course. Please follow their instruction on proper referencing your work.

Consequence of plagiarism

When you are caught submitting plagiarised content in an assessment item, you may be formally charged with plagiarism and have to attend a hearing where you will have the opportunities to explain the situation. If you are found to have plagiarised, you will face a formal academic charge, the penalty would be one of:

  • a zero grade for the assigment
  • a zero grade of the whole course
  • suspension up to two weeks
  • suspension for a semester
  • exclusion from the university

The student misconduct case shall be dealt in a timely manner within achievable deadlines.
