RMIT contributes 47 billion VND through scholarship program

As part of its effort to give back to the community, RMIT University has awarded 111 scholarships to the value of 47 billion VND (US$2 million) to prospective and current students through its scholarship program this year.

RMIT Vietnam Vice-President Academic, Professor Rick Bennett said that the University’s annual scholarship program rewards young people country-wide and around the world who demonstrate the RMIT values that the university prides itself on.

"Our scholarship winners all have one thing in common: they embody RMIT’s values of passion, impact, inclusion, agility, courage and imagination,” Professor Bennett said. “These are the values that we look for, and they are the very values that will help our students make a memorable impact on the world.”

Professor Bennett believes that this year’s scholarship holders will become change-makers and innovators who will give back to their communities, just like 1,221 recipients before them.

Of the 1,012 applications this year, only 111 were able to meet or exceed the standards of the tough scholarship selection process, Professor Bennett added.

The scholarships, which were allocated across nine categories and cover 100, 50 and 25 per cent of tuition fees, are offered in a variety of subject areas including the two new programs at RMIT, digital business and human resources management.

Professor Bennett emphasised that as Australia’s biggest investment in Vietnam, RMIT Vietnam’s profits remain in country and are reinvested back into the University and the communities it serves.

“After 19 years operating in Vietnam, RMIT has awarded 1,232 scholarships worth more than 319 billion VND (US$13.7 million) to young people from all over Vietnam and around the world,” he said.

 At the ceremony held at the Saigon South campus, Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management student Nguyen Le Viet Huy expressed his feelings of honour and gratitude while being awarded the most prestigious scholarship at RMIT Vietnam – the President’s Scholar Award.

 Huy thanked RMIT “for giving me the opportunity to become part of RMIT and receive an international education right here in Vietnam”, and strongly believed that he could conquer all obstacles with the knowledge and skills that he is going to acquire during his time studying at the University.

Visually impaired student Nghiem Thu Loan expressed that she felt happy and grateful while being awarded the Opportunity Scholarship from RMIT Vietnam.  

Loan spent a year preparing her application for the RMIT Vietnam's Opportunity Scholarship, a scholarship awarded once a year for disadvantaged students who cannot afford higher education. She shared her motivation for applying for the scholarship during the ceremony in her acceptance speech: “I want to hone my skills in the communication field so that I can project the voice for disabled people in society, and spread their stories to the community."

RMIT Vietnam scholarships are given to outstanding high school students who have achieved exemplary academic grades and demonstrated outstanding community engagement and leadership potential.
