Project Overview
Academic Building Two (AB2) is the second Academic Building for the Saigon South Campus of RMIT, at the projected cost of USD 15 million. AB2 will provide a series of teaching and learning spaces for all disciplines that are currently catered for in Vietnam.
The building will also provide a series of specialised learning spaces, which mainly focused on digital design/media and communications, and supports spaces for staff and administration. At the same time, this building also focuses on providing spaces for informal learning.
Academic Building Two’s objective is to offer flexibility in usage of space while allowing us to benefit fully from technological advances and innovative methods of teaching and learning; so that we are able to continue to enhance RMIT standing in Vietnam and throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
The all-weather connection between the two buildings is just one example of how AB2 interface with AB1. Another example is the northern covered pedestrian walkway that links AB1 & AB2 to the rest of the campus master plan.
AB2 anticipates a capacity of 4,000-5,000 students with a series of facilities located on the ground level, which directly connecting with the main internal pedestrian axis of the campus being: café and outdoor eating area, exposure to media hub, honours consulting space, two auditoriums and breakout spaces.
The auditoriums and breakout spaces are adaptable to expand into a 400 seat theatre that creates the ground floor into a large function facility.
On the upper levels, the central learning axis lends itself as an atrium light well to enable a vibrant and appropriate zone as circulation, also provides breakout and diffuses natural light to the teaching spaces.
The building has two naturally ventilated breezeways that provide access to vertical circulation, breakout and amenity zones through the building. All of the design features mentioned above through to material selection and construction methodology, are in line with environmental management principles adopted by RMIT Vietnam.
