1. Purpose:

The School of Languages & English is organizing a speaking competition for RMIT’s secondary school partners in order to:

  • Promote and reward proficiency in spoken English communication

  • Create an environment for students to exchange, learn and improve their English, based on topics drawn from their daily life

  • Raise students’ interest in and excitement about the subject

  • Create opportunities for secondary school students to participate in useful extracurricular activities

2. Eligibility:

Students from grades 6 to 9 from RMIT’s Secondary School Partners in Ho Chi Minh City.

3. Timeline:

  • Round 1: 7th October 2018  - 12th November 2018

  • Round 2: 24th November 2018

  • Round 3: 20th January 2019

4. Contest rules:

4.1. Round 1 (Writing): multiple-choice questions and writing task

  • For each school, the multiple choice papers will be marked, and the 20 students with the highest marks will then have their writing papers marked. The top five students from this group of 20 will continue to participate in the next round.

  • Writing task criteria: the writing task will be scored based on three main areas which are: language, expression, and content.

4.2. Round 2 (Individual speaking):

  • 5 students from each school will take part in the individual speaking contest with RMIT judges. School scores will be calculated based on the average score of 5 students. The 4 schools with the highest average scores will be selected for the next round.

  • Criteria: the speaking task will be scored based on three main areas which are: language, expression, and content.

4.3. Round 3 (Final):

  • Arts (optional): each school performs one English song in the form of singles, duets, or choirs for participation in the contest (The maximum time of the performance is 4 minutes). Participating schools will earn points.

  • Quiz: it will be a team competition, there are 10 to 15 questions and each team will press a bell to answer the questions.

  • Eloquence: each school will choose a representative to participate in the speaking contest about topics given previously. Each short talk lasts about 3 minutes, including two more questions from the examiner.

  • The result will be based on the combined results of the Arts, Quiz and Eloquence parts.

  • Each talk will be evaluated on the basis of language (vocabulary, collocation, pronunciation and grammar), expression of ideas (relevance, coherence, cohesion), and content (creativity, interest, clarity).

5. Prize structure:

  • First place team: each student will receive a 50% educational sponsorship for an English course at RMIT Vietnam (English for Teens or IELTS Test Preparation) and an Amazon Kindle reader.

  • Second place team: each student will receive a 50% educational sponsorship for an English course at RMIT Vietnam (English for Teens or IELTS Test Preparation) and a gift package of 1,000,000 VND worth.

  • Third place team: each student will receive a 30% educational sponsorship for an English course at RMIT Vietnam (English for Teens or IELTS Test Preparation) and a gift package of 500,000 VND worth.

  • Students passing round 1 and eliminated in round 2, will each receive an RMIT backpack.

  • Students passing round 2 and not winning in round 3 (final), will each receive an RMIT backpack.

6. Conditions for educational sponsorship:

  • Educational sponsorships cannot be transferred to another person or exchanged for cash.

  • Educational sponsorship values cannot be combined with any other promotional or discount program for English courses at RMIT Vietnam.

  • Educational sponsorship values are applicable to English for Teens program or IELTS Test Preparation program at RMIT Vietnam, SGS Campus.

  • Educational sponsorship values are entitled to only one campaign per year.

  • Educational sponsorship value are only applicable to full courses (not part of the courses).
