LEADERSHIP IN ACTION or LEADERSHIP INACTION

Arthur Shelley, Adjunct Lecturer, RMIT University Melbourne

The function of July 1st, 2010 was a special alumni event where about 80 RMIT Vietnam alumni, staff and MBA students from Melbourne, Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City gathered to listen to RMIT Melbourne’s Arthur Shelley and network with each other.  Arthur’s presentation about leadership was unique because it was based on his own discovery in which business environments are considered organizational zoos. The keynote speech was therefore very vivid and interesting with the illustration of animals symbolizing different leadership behaviour types. Many questions were raised and answers were well received by all.

Also at X-Cream Café as many other alumni events, all alumni, MBA students and staff of RMIT enjoyed a nice mixture of Asian and Western finger food and drink. People shared their business issues, study experience as well as culture differences.

The event was organized by RMIT School of Business and Law in collaboration with RMIT Vietnam Alumni Relations Office.

SUMMER NIGHT MASQUERADE BALL REUNITES RMIT VIETNAM ALUMNI

RMIT Vietnam Alumni convened on Saturday June 12th at the Gala Royale Convention Center for the inaugural Alumni Reunion Ball. Guests arrived disguised by chic masks, in keeping with the night’s theme of “Summer Night Masquerade.” The event was organized by the RMIT Vietnam Alumni Association and the University’s External Relations Unit.

Alumni were warmly welcomed by RMIT Vietnam President, Professor Merilyn Liddell, who updated alumni on the development plan for the University and its alumni community. Mr. George Nguyen, President of the Alumni Association, reminded guests of the benefits of engagement through the alumni network, while disguised in a sinister “batman” style mask. The Alumni Association Vice President and MC for the night, Ms. Thu Nguyen, dressed as a noble lord led the night exceptionally well.

The Student Life Photo Contest included a collection of photos depicting university life from many angles: from the first day at RMIT, to having fun together while doing charity work, to final examinations. First prize went to Ms. Mai Vinh Trinh for a heartwarming graduation group picture. Second prize went to Ms. Hau Minh Hieu for a cute photo capturing herself and her classmates at the beach.

The night was highlighted by Saigon Players’ lively performance of Romeo and Juliet Rewind. The skit explored alternative and humorous endings to Shakespeare’s classic. Saigon Players’ also graciously contributed to a fun and upbeat masquerade performance to open the event, in which many guests, male and female alike, received roses from the cast.

The heart of the night was lit up by a sensual yet elegant salsa performance by Mr. Luong Thien Chuong, an alumnus and X-Salsa Club leader, and his partner Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Tien. The expert couple gave lessons to 10 brave couples who volunteered to first learn the “moves”, and then compete with one another. The hall was overwhelmed by the audience’s applause and whistles in voting for the “Salsa Idols 2010”. The winning couple was none other than Mr. Steve Paris, RMIT Vietnam Director of Student Services and his Salsa partner on the night, Ms. Tran Thao Ly, a Design Alumna.

For those with two left feet and a poor eye for a good photo, there were lucky draw prizes and even prizes to be found under lucky dinner table seats. Guests didn’t go home empty handed.

VIETNAM IRELAND FORUM FOR ICT ENTREPRENEURIAL ALUMNI

The forum, titled “Entrepreneurship: Building Your Own Start-up”, provided a platform for Irish entrepreneurs to share their experience of building a technology company in Ireland, a country with one of the highest concentrations of ICT activity in the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries. RMIT welcomed H.E. Ms. Maeve Collins, Ambassador of Ireland and a delegation of Irish Information and Communication Technology (ICT) companies, B.Comm students and alumni entrepreneurs.

“There is a recognition that future growth is going to be strongest in Asia, hence the importance of establishing links with dynamic enterprises in this region. Today represented a great opportunity for our alumni to establish relationships and open channels into overseas markets” said RMIT Vietnam Director of External Relations Kieran Brennan.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

Alumni of RMIT Vietnam gathered at X-Cream Café recently to take part in a Career Development Workshop organised by Work, Careers and Lifelong Learning Unit.

The workshop, on Saturday 3 April, provided an opportunity for alumni to reflect on their values when it comes to career decision making, and also to network with fellow alumni, recall their RMIT experiences and share career concerns.

Attendees were encouraged to reflect on their interests, strengths, values, networking experiences and stories of career pursuit.

Guest speaker was Phoenix Ho, RMIT Vietnam career counsellor, who is amongst RMIT Vietnam’s Acclaimed Alumni, having won the TNT Award for Outstanding Graduate in 2004.
