    Counselling Services

Students and staff may be faced with a number of difficulties relating to family issues, relationships, mental or physical health, substance abuse, death or any other stressful life event.  These problems can interfere with you performing well academically and professionally as well as living a healthy and happy life. Being away from home for the first time can bring up a mixture of different feelings some of which may be causing you concern. As well as being an exciting and positive time, studying at university can be a stressful time and exam pressure and high expectations on your performance can lead to problems such as anxiety, panic or avoidance of doing the work!

Asking for help or advice is an important step in dealing with unfamiliar or difficult situations in a mature way.

Although well trained and equipped to deal with most psychological difficulties, students or staff do not need to be in a major crisis to see a counsellor.

Counselling services may be useful for many kinds of problems, including:

  • Academic-related difficulties
  • Love, friendship and relationship difficulties
  • Grief, separation and loss
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Emotional and self-esteem issues
  • Physical, sexual or mental abuse, assault or harassment
  • Pregnancy or abortion
  • Divorce, and family relationship issues
  • Stress management
  • Drug, alcohol, gaming or gambling problems
  • Other personal issues and concerns
  • Confidentiality is a key component in counselling to ensure that issues can be safely shared.

Except in highly exceptional circumstances, all discussions with counsellors remain confidential. Counsellors do not share any information with anyone (including teachers, supervisors, parents or friends) about anything discussed during a counselling session.

Counselling services can sometimes provide small group meetings or workshops for staff or student groups. Stress management and life skills workshops are held every semester.

Students and staff can make an appointment online, by phone, or visit the counseling service to arrange a time to meet with a counsellor in confidence.
