What are the selection criteria?

We are looking for smart, flexible, adaptable students keen for adventure and a real-life challenge. We want students who have completed at least 144 credit points of their degree and who want to put their knowledge to the test.

Each project will require a particular range of skills and knowledge to meet the project objectives, so in the first instance we will verify whether you are able to demonstrate possession of those skills and knowledge. The projects require teams of students, from different discipline areas, work together. In addition to possessing the relevant skills, you need to demonstrate that you have the ability, or at least the willingness, to work productively as a member of a team. This project requires travelling to Vietnam and an ability to undertake work-related activities in a cross-cultural context. You will need to commit to the project and demonstrate your ability to meet all your requirements and responsibilities.

Who selects the students?

The selection of students will be undertaken by the WIL Projects Manager and the Academic Project Coordinators. Depending on your discipline there may be additional staff from your school involved.

How long is the in-country portion?

The in-country program generally lasts 10-14 days. If you decide to participate in the additional Cross Cultural Communications elective you may be required to arrive earlier.

Where will I be staying whilst in Vietnam?

All students (both Vietnamese and Australian) will be staying in the same hotel together. All accommodations and travel within the in-country portion will be arranged for you

Accommodation will generally be twin-share, with bathroom facilities in the room- single rooms will be available upon request but will cost extra. It is a requirement of participation in this project that you stay with all other participants.

What costs am I personally liable for?

The materials fee for participating in this project will cover the costs of your accommodation, transportation, 2 team dinners and a cultural excursion.

Students will be responsible for their own costs meals and other personal expenses, and any excursions undertaken in addition to those directly organised for the project.

Will I be paid for my work on this project?

Probably not: most of the projects are genuine work activities for non-Government and non-profit organisations. Arrangements with commercial, profit-making organisations will differ on a project-by-project basis and may involve some minimal payment. This project description specifies this information.

Will this course be counted as a valid Work-Integrated Learning component of my program?

Yes. This is an authentic work-integrated learning course, which carries 12 credit points. However, some industry registration boards have strict requirements and will not recognise off-shore activities undertaken without approved industry supervision. Consult your School for guidance and clarification on this matter.

Do I have to stay in the Hotel?

Yes- staying with your team in the hotel is a condition of the projects. We provide letters for students’ parents explaining the rational if needed.

Are 24 credit points available?
Yes. You may also elect to undertake Cross Cultural Communication in conjunction with SOCU2248.

The aim of the course is to explore the nature of cross-cultural interaction within global and local contexts with particular application to identity, religion, language, gender issues and to general workplace settings. It prepares students for professional practice in international and multicultural contexts.

Students are expected to bring to the course openness to diversity and a realization that in an increasingly globalized world communicating cross-culturally has become a greater necessity.

Becoming aware and develop understanding about both ‘self’ and ‘the other’ is the core theme that forms the foundation of the course.

Participation in this course may require undertaking some preparatory classes online.
